Are Your Hands Idle?

Today I helped my friend go through her husband's Grandmother's things that were boxed up for sale. What wonderful treasures!

As I picked through boxes of linens that were cross stitched with tatting on the edges I had to hold myself back from taking them all home.

Not only were they beautiful, but doing needle work myself, each piece was special, unique, and I assume created with love.

This morning I was reading Proverbs 31. I have to admit I have a love hate relationship with that woman. It has to be humanly impossible to do everything she is credited with.

I just can't accept one woman could do all that with out electricity, a computer, a car and Starbucks.

The scripture that grabbed me today is verse 27. The NIV says "She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness."

As I picked through each beautiful piece I couldn't help think of the time it took to create each masterpiece. Everything imaginable in stacks and stacks of fabric creations.

This woman was not idle, judging by the amount of work in those boxes. Her hands were busy, instead of being on the computer, or phone she was using her talents to create.

So many times we get sidetracked by life and lose track of what we are really called to do.

We are to make the home. Fill it with treasures, memories, smells, music, love, beauty.

We are to watch over the affairs of our household. Being alert at all times. Watching what comes in and what goes out. Not just finances, but people, things, books, TV shows, movies, music, web sites. All the affairs of our household. It's a big job, but it's one of our assignments from God.

Are you going to tell God He's given you to much to do?

Picture a warrior in full armor guarding her post, being responsible for the well being of what is inside her doors. Always ready, never idle.

What ever your hands find to do make sure they are creating as unto the Lord. Whether it's cross stitch, knitting, drawing, writing, or cleaning out a cupboard make your activity an act of worship.

We must challenge ourselves to resist the temptation if idleness.

I know if asked, God will give us the energy and creativity to do what needs to be done.

This week end, let's do a little something extra as a tribute to that woman in Proverbs.

I just had to share some of the pieces I brought home with me! I'm sorry the pictures aren't better so you could see the detail.

Have a blessed and fruitful weekend!

  1. I'm going to be picturing myself in armour while I'm cleaning the house now, thank you, but I know if it's from the Lord it will not be heavey to wear.

    The needlework is amazing!

  2. I like the way you developed the concept of "looking over the affairs of our households"...

I believe it is quite consistent with the truth of that Scripture. Thanks for the good truth & challenge.
